Finding #1: Change management matters - effort and success correlates

In this blog series, we are presenting five key findings from our CPH Change 2021 survey. This is the first finding about the correlation between effort and success.

Finding 1

Among many things, we asked the participants about their effort and success rate. The two parameters correlates. The graph strongly indicates that change management matters.

For each change management effectiveness category (poor, fair, good, and excellent) the chart shows the percentage of participants meeting or exceeding objectives.

87% of participants who performed “excellent” change management harvested a high level of the benefits their change initiative was expected to deliver.

A “good” change management effort is also somewhat positive for the initiative, and an important step towards a higher level of benefit realization.

However, as the survey shows only 42% of the participants gained a high level of benefit realization based on a “good” effort.

About the participants

86 of the 350 CPH Change participants provided input for the survey. That is 25% of the participants.

Most of the respondents are experienced change managers. 76% have worked with changes and change management for more than 5 years.

The survey participants are mainly change managers, consultants, and project managers, working in or for large organizations. 62% of the survey participants are working in organizations with more than 1,000 employees.

They are widely spread over industries, with the majority operating within consulting, finance, and banking. The three CPH Change Award finalists represent municipal government (Faaborg Midtfyn Municipality), utilities (HOFOR – Greater Copenhagen Utilities), and energy (Ørsted).
